The historic Howard Family shipyard, most recently known as Jeffboat shipyard, in Jeffersonville, Indiana has been a cornerstone of the town for nearly two centuries, but after its closure in 2018, the future of the site was uncertain. Now, exciting plans are emerging for the 80-acre site along the Ohio River, and residents are eager to learn more.
In partnership with property owner American Commercial Barge Line, the City of Jeffersonville has enlisted the expertise of the Wheatley Group and OHM Advisors to create a master plan for the site. According to John Pacyga of OHM Advisors, the plans aim to meet the needs of the city's young and growing population. With around 50% of Jeffersonville's residents under the age of 40, the development will focus on providing new and exciting opportunities for the next generation.
The proposed plans include a mix of residential spaces, small stores, restaurants, and even an 80-100 room hotel. The jewel in the crown, however, could be a full-service marina, offering access to the beautiful Ohio River. For those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land, the plans mention a potential art sculpture park and a converted railway trail, perfect for enjoying the great outdoors.
But that's not all – for the thrill-seekers, the plans include indoor games, ziplining, and even an observation tower offering stunning views of Jeffersonville and the Louisville skyline. And while the development will undoubtedly draw in new residents and commercial properties, Pacyga believes that it could also attract people from outside the region, who are looking for a better quality of life.
